If you are dissatisfied with the people who surround you and you want people to change you must change first. Why this order? Because admitting your mistakes in this life comes before seeing other people’s mistakes. You cannot change others if you do not have the ability to see and admitting your own mistakes.
Admitting Mistakes is Part of Being The Light Of The World
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” (Mat. 5:13). Do you not remember that you are called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world? If you lose your saltiness you are thrown out and trampled underfoot. What will happen if you lose the light that the Son of God gives you?
If you think people around you are in darkness that means you are not projecting light strong enough. You know the laws of physics. If you turn on the light in your room and it’s strong enough the entire room will be filled with light and there will be no darkness in that room. This is why the change should start from you, from your own self.
If you are not convinced in this, then your life will be filled with complaining about everything. And instead of finding solutions within you, you complain about everything you will suffer, both in this life and the eternal.
When will you realize that “we are receiving the due reward of our deeds” (Luke 23:41)? The personal inner change happens at that point: when you understand and realize this. When you start seeing your own mistakes and sins. When you realize that you reap what you sow (Galatians 6:7). When you know that you rightfully receive what you deserve.
Seeing Your Own Mistakes
This is called an ability to see your own mistakes first. Once you realize this, once you start seeing your own mistakes, you see that they disturb you and like passions they drag you down in your spiritual life. Once you start seeing your own mistakes you hopefully will have a desire to change them, to do something about them. You realize that they come from your mind first. Therefore, you start doing things to control your mind, your heart’s desires and to change your behavior.
If we don’t do this we will always judge others and be unhappy with everything that surrounds us. We will think we judge them with justice, but if so, would you like God to judge you with justice?
When you admin your own mistakes and start controlling your mind and behavior, you start changing. When you change your mind and behavior, by the Grace of God this change influences and surroundings too. Our Lord Jesus Christ said “Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:38).
Holy Spirit Works In You And Flows From Within
You see, when you change the Holy Spirit of God starts working in your, changing you and flows within you to the outside, to everything that surrounds you. Not only they will start being positively influenced by the Grace of the Holy Spirit, but also your attitude toward the people surrounding you will change.
The Church Fathers say that the first sign of healing soul is the ability of seeing and admitting your own mistakes.
