Should You Pray The Lord’s Prayer Daily?

Our Father who Art in Heaven - The Lord's Prayer

One of my friends asked me, “why should I repeat the Lord’s Prayer daily, if I can pray other prayers in my own words. Wouldn’t that be more honest and sincere to the Lord if I prayed in my own words only?”

What is the Our Father Prayer?

The disciples of our Lord Jesus where familiar with the concept of prayer and they were obviously people of prayer themselves. They knew the Old Testament and had the rich heritage of Psalms. Yet, “one day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say…” (Luke 11:1-2) our Father, who art in heaven…

In Matthew’s Gospel, The Lord instructs the same way, saying “This, then, is how you should pray” (Matt. 6:9).

For this reason, “Our Father” is given an utmost importance in Christian Churches, especially in the East, where every service starts and ends with it because this prayer is taught by our Lord Jesus Christ. This is why it’s called the Lord’s Prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer Is Instructed By Jesus

Thus, we have an instruction from our Lord on how we “should pray.” You are not insincere when you repeat the same prayer every day. First, it is taught by our Lord. Second, it has everything you need for your life. You call him Father. You praise and love him for his holiness. You want to be with him in his Kingdom. You want his will not your’s because his will is better than your’s for your life. You want bread for your daily  needs (spiritual and physical). You want forgiveness and it’s so good that the Lord Jesus taught us that God will forgive us the way we forgive people. Otherwise, who would be forgiven, as so numerable are our sins. You wan’t God’s protection to not let you go into temptation by making wrong decisions, but instead, to deliver you from evil.

The Need of The Lord’s Prayer

We need this kind of prayer and conversation daily. This is why we repeat the Lord’s Prayer and pray it daily and it never seems to be a repetition. You can still continue to pray in your own words. In fact, see one of my previous stories about what you should ask in your prayers and two common ways the devil attacks people in their prayer. For this very reason, it is very much important to concentrate your attention on your prayer when different thoughts attack your mind during your prayer.

Pray Without Ceasing

It is also important to make your prayer life a firm rule. Apostle Paul instructs ‪Christians‬ to “‪‎Pray‬ without ceasing” (1st Thes. 5:17). We have a beautiful short prayer to put this in practice. When you inhale, say in your mind “Lord Jesus Christ.” When you exhale, say “Have Mercy on Me a Sinner.” You can do this with each breath. This is the Jesus Prayer, the long version of which is “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Stay faithful to our Lord and his teachings so you may have life. Peace and blessings to you from our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Father – The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done,
    On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our debts,
    As we also have forgiven our debtors;
And lead us not into temptation,
    But deliver us from evil.

Matthew 6:9-13

    The Lord’s Prayer is also an affirmation that we are “Children of God” because it starts with the words “Our Father!” It is all inclusive. If were soley for Jews – Jesus could have said “God of Abraham…,” but He did not.

      Amen Jim, very well said. Until then and in no other religion God is known as Love and Father. We are children of God. How sweet it is to say Our Father in Heaven.
