How To Quit Smoking and Alcohol Dependence: Christian Perspective

Quit Alcohol Dependence, Christian Help

You are asking me how to quit smoking and free yourself from alcoholism? First of all, make a firm decision to quit the destructive habit and every time when the urge comes to you, take your Bible and read one chapter from the Gospels. If the urge is still there, read another chapter. The Word of God is different from the word of men. It has has the kind of power, which our words don’t have. Therefore, in the beginning, even if you don’t know what you are doing and how reading a chapter from the Gospel will help you to quit smoking or drinking, keep doing it because know that the evil spirits understand the power of the Word and they tremble before it.

If you doubt these words, hear this story, which I read in the book, called The Way of a Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues His Way.

In the book there is an episode, in which one Russian Army officers tells the pilgrim that he used to be an alcoholic. As a result of his drinking he lost everything: his position, captain’s rank and became a soldier.

“One day a monk visited us,” tells the the now-officer. “When he saw my sad face he inquired the reason of my sadness. After I told him why I was said, he told me that his brother also was an alcoholic. His spiritual father game him a Bible and instructed him to read a chapter from the Gospel when he felt the urge to drink wine. Each time the urge returned, he was to read yet another chapter. His brother strictly followed the instruction and the addiction to alcohol left him in short time.”

“I am not accustomed to reading the Gospel”, I said to the monk. I get sleepy and drowsiness attacks me.” (See Two Common Ways The Devil Attacks Your During Prayer)

“It’s OK,” said the monk, giving me his Bible. When you feel the urge to drink alcohol, read one chapter from the Gospel. Bad addictions are certainly the work of the devil. Just read a chapter from the Gospels when you feel the urge to drink alcohol.

“I thankfully took the Bible, put it in my bag where I kept my belongings and forgot about it. Some time later I felt an irresistible desire to drink alcohol. I opened my bag to take some money to run the nearby grocery story to by a bottle of wine. I saw the Bible in my bag and remembered the monk’s admonition.  I read the first chapter of the Gospel of Matthew and couldn’t understand much. Then I remembered that the monk said if you do not understand, read another chapter. Well, I thought I would read yet another chapter. I understood the second chapter a little bit more and decided to read the third chapter too. All of the sudden the the barracks bell sounded, announcing it was time for the soldiers to retire. Obviously it was already late to run to grocery store.

“In the morning I woke up and was getting ready to go to the store to buy a bottle of wine. Then I said to myself, ‘I wonder what would happen if I read yet another chapter from the Bible?’ I did read a chapter and actually felt better. I did not go out. Then, after that each time the urge to drink alcohol came I took my Bible and read a chapter. If the urge didn’t leave me I would continue reading another chapter. Each time it felt better. By the time I finished reading the four Gospels the urge to drink had vanished entirely. Now, it has been twenty years that I have not touched any alcoholic beverage. Things improved in my life. I was gradually promoted through the military ranks and now am a captain again.

“Everyone was astonished by my transformation. From the time I was healed of alcoholism, I made a vow to myself that for the rest of my life I would read the Bible, one Gospel every day, no matter how busy I was.”

You see dear friend? This delightful story is just one example of many, showing the powerful effect of the Word of God on our lives, addictions and freedom from them.

You see dear friend, what effect has the Word of God. Our Lord Jesus says that he is sent “to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18).

This is your real help my friend. This is your time to be freed from your addictions. This is the time of the Lord’s favor on all of us who love Him and listen his Word. God’s peace and mercy be upon you.
