The Promise of “Rivers of Living Water” With 3 Conditions

Rivers of Living Water John 7:37

On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. John 7:37-38

This is the not the first time that the Lord Jesus said these words. He had already said these words to the Samaritan woman in the 4th chapter of John. Do you remember? There he said “but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Three conditions must be met.

  • You have to feel thirsty for God.
  • You have to come to Jesus and drink (learn from him).
  • You have to believe in Jesus.

This is faith in action. You thirst for God and you go to Him to learn from Him and have the burning desire to live by his commandments.

The promise that the Lord Jesus gives here is about unseen things, but the way He says, is more than powerful. There is so much love in it. See how John Chrysostom explains these words in his commentary of John’s Gospel. “What He says is this, “I draw no man to Me by necessity and constraint; but if anyone has great zeal, if anyone is inflamed with desire, him I call.”

He calls us neither by necessity nor by constraint, but purely out of love. Open invitation to share his life with us. If you believe these words, what will you do about it? Will you let the Word of God work in you?

the more you give, the more we can spread the Word of God.
