That’s why the Apostle Paul taught to walk “by the spirit.” (Romans 8: 5; Gal. 5:16). This is the only real way to overcome worldly difficulties and change bad habits because when your mind is governed by the Spirit the result is peace and real life. If you want peace, walk by the Spirit.
How to walk by the Spirit.
Look. We have God-given freedom to make choices. We must use that freedom not only to meet the needs of our bodies, but primarily the needs of our souls because whether you rejoice or mourn it’s all in your soul. Paul in Galatians 5 presents both the fruits of the body and fruits of the spirit. The question is with what things you occupy your mind. This is a spiritual warfare to govern your mind.
Your real enemy is inside you, which wants to govern your mind. Don’t you know how difficult it is to govern your thoughts? Don’t you know how difficult it is to pray with attention? So walking by the spirit means to occupy your mind and thus actions not with the acts of the body, but with the acts of the Spirit.
“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Gal. 5:19-23
You can only win this war (flesh against the spirit) with the help of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other way or technique because that’s what the 2000 years of the History of the Church has shown in the lives of true saints. This is why Jesus is called the Savior of The World. If you call on his name, open your hearts for him, and remain FAITHFUL to His Word, then you will receive his help to conquer the temptations of this world, win this warfare and have eternal life with him. Lord Jesus Christ, may I never be separated from you.
